Eco-Friendly Caskets and Urns

Eco-Friendly Caskets are crafted by skilled weavers as a small cottage industry, not in factories. They are created from sustainable materials such as fast-growing willow, seagrass and bamboo which don’t require heavy machinery for harvesting, giving them a small carbon footprint. Casket linings are made from unbleached natural cotton.

Woven/wicker caskets in willow, seagrass or bamboo are available in adult and infant sizes. Each casket is suitable for viewing and services, followed by burial or cremation. These caskets can be used as part of a traditional funeral or a greener funeral ritual.

While beautifully handcrafted, they are also sturdy, with each adult casket tested to carry up to 350 lbs. A rigid eco-friendly base provides added strength.

In addition to the woven caskets which come in various sizes, a handmade mulberry paper infant casket inlaid with flower petals and lined in fleece, is available.

Bamboo Casket

Each casket features durable, convenient handles for carrying and a lined natural unbleached cotton interior with matching pillow. Each bamboo casket also includes a simple shroud.

The bamboo caskets provide an alternative to the tapering willow and seagrass caskets. They are the same width from head to toe. These caskets are available in three sizes which nest comfortably, one inside the other for secure, convenient and less expensive shipping.

Biodegradable Urns

Water or earth biodegradable urns can be chosen for burial or scattering. We offer urns in a wide range of materials, including handmade paper, sand and gelatin, cornstarch, bamboo, and recycled paper. Many come in a variety of colors and styles, allowing the utmost in personal choice and personalization.

If multiple family members or loved ones want to participate in scattering, or create their own small memorials, keepsake-size urns allow these options. A number of Passages urns come in mini or keepsake sizes. Individual urn descriptions will note if they are also available in a smaller size.

Water Biodegradable Urns are designed specifically for that purpose and will float briefly and sink gracefully. They are sustainably produced in a variety of natural materials, including recycled paper, rock salt, gelatin and sand. Although they were designed for water burial, all of these urns can also be used for earth burial.
